BIO

Brad Jepson is one of the most exciting young horn players in the Southeast. He is known in jazz and funk circles for his aggressive tone and emotionally charged voice on the trombone. Living in Greenville, SC, he can be seen playing regularly with such bands as the Brad Jepson Quintet, the Gypsy Souls, the Shannon Hoover Quartet, and the Craig Sorrells Project. He is also an engineer at Jacobs Engineering.

Growing up in Kansas City, Brad picked up the trombone at the age of 11 and never looked back. Studying with Dave Cooper and Doug Talley, Brad?s early influences included J.J. Johnson, Slide Hampton, Duke Ellington, Charles Mingus, and McCoy Tyner.

Brad earned a Bachelor of Music in Jazz Studies as well as a Bachelor of Science in Chemical and Biological Engineering at Northwestern University in Evanston, IL, where he studied with Mike Kocour, Andy Baker, Joel Spencer, and Charlie Vernon. During this time, his musical tastes expanded dramatically to include everything from Freddie Hubbard and Chris Potter to Steve Reich and Philip Glass.

Brad moved to Greenville in 2007 and developed a more informed and mature sound. From Kansas City he had learned feel of the blues; from Chicago he had learned the language of modern jazz; and now from South Carolina he has learned the passion of Gospel-infused music. Brad produced and directed his first album, Jazz On The Brane, in 2008.

Brad mixes all of these influences into his performances, making jazz funky and funk intricately jazzy. Brad will undoubtedly continue to exhilarate audiences as he explores the musical space between diverse genres.
